GIS Requirements

To access GIS functionality in Trimble Unity Field, you must complete the following configuration steps in both your ArcGIS portal and in Trimble Unity Construct.

IMPORTANT: If the GIS configuration requirements are not completed, you will not be able to access GIS functionality in the app.

Key Requirements at a Glance

  • ArcGIS User Type: Editing GIS asset data requires a Mobile Worker user type with the privilege to edit features.
  • Web Map Configuration: A web map must be created, configured, and enabled for editing. Additionally, a user must have access to web maps in order to switch between web maps in the app.
  • GNSS Metadata Setup: The web map must be configured with the necessary layers and settings for GNSS metadata collection.
  • Web Map Search: Search functionality must be configured within the web map to allow users to search for assets and addresses.
  • Configure Offline Map Areas: Offline map areas must be configured for offline access, synchronization, and download.
  • Web Map Configuration: A web map must be configured in Trimble Unity Construct and assigned to a relevant service definition with the Mobile check box selected.
  • User Roles and Access: Additional Admin settings, such as assigning roles to maps and defining user access, are required. These settings must be configured by Administrators in Trimble Unity Construct.

ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise Configuration

To access real-time GIS feature and asset data collection in the field and record attribute data, you must configure user type, web map, and GNSS metadata settings.

ArcGIS User Type

Editing GIS asset data requires a Mobile Worker user type with the privilege to edit features.

If a user does not have this user type and privilege, they will be unable to make any changes to asset details.

  1. Open your ArcGIS portal.
  2. Confirm the mobile user has the Mobile Worker user type. If the user does not have the Mobile Worker user type, change the user type. See Change user types on Esri's website for more information.
  1. Confirm the user has the privilege to edit features (through either Features > Edit or Features > Edit with full control).

Web Map Configuration

A web map must be created, configured and enabled for editing. Additionally, a user must have access to web maps in order to switch between web maps in the app.

  1. Open your ArcGIS portal.
  2. Create a map. See Create a map on Esri's website for more information.
  3. Configure the map. See Configure the map on Esri's website for more information.
  4. Design an editable layer. See Design an editable layer on Esri's website for more information.
  5. Ensure the web map is shared with the appropriate users or groups in your organization. See Share a web map on Esri's website for more information.

GNSS Metadata Setup

To store GNSS metadata for features, particularly for line, polygon, and point features, your feature layers must have specific fields defined and attachments enabled.

  1. Open your ArcGIS portal.
  2. Enable attachments for your feature layers.
  3. Define GPS metadata fields in your feature layers.

To allow users to search for spatial and non-spatial assets or addresses, both online and offline, you must configure search functionality for your web map.

This is done by configuring which layers are searchable.

  1. Open your ArcGIS portal.
  2. Configure feature and table search for your web map.

To create and download multiple offline map areas associated to a single web map, you must configure offline functionality for the web map.

Follow these requirements when creating an offline map area from an Esri web map for use with Trimble Unity Field:

  1. Open your ArcGIS portal.
  2. Enable all layers, including the basemap and reference layers, for offline use. The basemap must be available for offline download.
  3. Enable synchronization on the layers.
  4. Ensure the web map does not have any map services included.

Trimble Unity Construct Admin Configuration

PREREQUISITES:

  • Configuration settings must be completed in ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise before completing the configuration settings in Trimble Unity Construct. See GIS in the Trimble Unity Construct Admin Guide for more details.

IMPORTANT: Trimble Unity Field requires a web map.

The following are not supported in Trimble Unity Field:

  • Mobile map packages (MMPK): MMPKs are not supported.
  • Map Image Layers: These layers are not supported. When added to a Service Definition, they will not render in the app. While map image services configured in a web map may render in the app, full interaction with their service layers (e.g. viewing asset attributes) will be compromised.
