Offline Map Areas

You can download multiple offline map areas associated to a single web map in advance to maintain full map access while disconnected from the internet. Using offline map areas is strongly recommended, even while online, to improve field app performance, increase map rendering speed, and reduce load on your organization's GIS server during high-demand periods or group training.

After an offline map area has been created, you can download it, view its file size and sync status, switch between different areas, refresh it for the latest updates, and clear it from your device.

If the selected web map is configured in ArcGIS to use a tile package (.tpk) from your organization as the offline basemap, that linked tile package also appears in Offline Map Areas, where you can download it and use it offline.

Floor-aware capabilities, including the Select Floor tool and automatic level filtering, are supported within downloaded offline map areas.

Subtype group layers and Utility Network associations are included in downloaded map areas in Trimble Unity Field for Maintain, allowing for granular layer control and hierarchy navigation without an active internet connection.

PREREQUISITES:

You can view the offline map areas that are available for download from the map. The offline map areas configured for the web map are listed here.

Offline map areas must first be created and configured in the web map by your GIS administrator in ArcGIS. If no map areas appear in the panel, contact your administrator.

  1. On the map, tap the More Actions icon.

  1. Tap Offline Map Areas.

The Offline Map Areas panel opens, displaying the available offline map areas and their respective file sizes.

You can download offline map areas.

  1. Tap Download to download the offline map area.

After an offline map area is downloaded, the card displays the file size and the date it was last updated and you can access the More Actions menu.

  • More Actions icon: Tap to access more actions.
  • Clear Downloads: Tap to clear the downloaded offline map area.
  • Refresh: Tap to refresh the offline map area with the latest changes.
  • X icon: Tap to close the Offline Map Areas panel.

When the selected web map has a linked organization tile package, you can download it from Offline Map Areas and use it as the configured offline basemap.

Referencing a tile package (.tpk) in your organization allows for more customization in what is included in the base map. The .tpk file is downloaded to the device for offline use, providing instant map rendering with no delay from cellular or network limitations.

  1. On the map, tap the More Actions icon.
  2. Tap Offline Map Areas.

The Offline Map Areas panel opens, displaying the available offline map areas and their respective file sizes.

If a tile package is linked to the web map, it appears below the offline map areas and lists the linked package.

  1. Tap the Download icon.

The tile package downloads to your device.

When the download completes, you can use the map offline with the linked tile package. Tap Clear Download to remove the downloaded tile package from your device.

NOTE: If the same tile package is linked to more than one web map, the app downloads it once and reuses the cached file.

You can switch between different downloaded offline map areas to make one active for display.

  1. To switch between different offline map areas, tap the desired offline map area.

The selected downloaded map displays and becomes the active map.

  1. Tap the More Actions icon next to the desired offline map area.
  2. Tap Refresh.

The offline map area is refreshed and displays an updated timestamp of the last sync time.

  1. Tap the More Actions icon next to the offline map area you wish to clear.
  2. Tap Clear Download.

The offline map area download is cleared and the map area returns to the default state.
