To access real-time GIS feature and asset data collection in the field and record attribute data, you must configure user type, web map, and GNSS metadata settings.

ArcGIS User Type

The required ArcGIS user type depends on the specific workflows assigned to the user: 

• Read-Only Workflows: If a user does not participate in workflows where editing GIS data occurs, a Viewer user type is supported.
• Editing GIS Workflows: If a user performs edits to GIS data (either geometry or attribute details), a Mobile Worker (or higher) user type is required.
• Advanced GIS Workflows: For workflows that require editing advanced data models in the field, such as Esri Utility Network data, the ArcGIS Advanced Editor User type extension is required in addition to the Mobile Worker user type.

NOTE: Attribute updates made during secondary workflows, such as writing inspection condition scores directly to the GIS when a field inspection is completed or closed, are considered GIS user edits and require a Mobile Worker user type.

To configure or confirm user types and privileges: 

1. Open your ArcGIS portal.
2. Confirm the mobile user has the appropriate user type assigned (e.g. Viewer or Mobile Worker) based on their operational requirements. If the user does not have the correct user type, change the user type. See Change user types on Esri's website for more information.

• For editing users, confirm that the user has the privilege to edit features (through either Features > Edit or Features > Edit with full control).
• For users editing Utility Network or other advanced datasets in the field, verify that the ArcGIS Advanced Editor User type extension license has been assigned to the user. See Esri Utility Network (UN) Data Requirements for Trimble Unity on The Network for more information.

Web Map Configuration

A web map must be created, configured and enabled for editing. Additionally, a user must have access to web maps in order to switch between web maps in the app.

1. Open your ArcGIS portal.
2. Create a map. See Create a map on Esri's website for more information.
3. Configure the map. See Configure the map on Esri's website for more information.
4. Design an editable layer. See Design an editable layer on Esri's website for more information.
5. Configure offline web maps. This is highly recommended to reduce the load on GIS servers and improve field app performance. See Take web maps offline on Esri's website for details.
6. Ensure the web map is shared with the appropriate users or groups in your organization. See Share a web map on Esri's website for more information.

Web Maps containing Utility Network layers must be published without definition queries or layer filters, and must have specific UN service resources registered in Trimble Unity Admin. See Esri Utility Network (UN) Data Requirements for Trimble Unity on The Network for more information.

GNSS Metadata Setup

To store GNSS metadata for features, particularly for line, polygon, and point features, your feature layers must have specific fields defined and attachments enabled.

1. Open your ArcGIS portal.
2. Enable attachments for your feature layers.
3. Define GPS metadata fields in your feature layers.

To allow users to search for spatial and non-spatial assets or addresses, both online and offline, you must configure search functionality for your web map.

This is done by configuring which layers are searchable.

1. Open your ArcGIS portal.
2. Configure feature and table search for your web map.

To create and download multiple offline map areas associated to a single web map, you must configure offline functionality for the web map.

IMPORTANT: It is strongly recommended that you configure offline map areas for all field workers. Downloading map areas locally significantly reduces demand on the GIS server—especially during high-demand periods or simultaneous multi-user training—improving app responsiveness, and ensuring data access when cellular connections are intermittent or unavailable. Offline maps must be configured in your ArcGIS portal. See Take web maps offline on Esri's website for more information on how to create offline map areas.

Follow these requirements when creating an offline map area from an Esri web map for use with Trimble Unity Field:

1. Open your ArcGIS portal.
2. Enable all layers, including the basemap and reference layers, for offline use. The basemap must be available for offline download.
3. Enable synchronization on the layers.
4. Ensure the web map does not have any map services included.

To use an organization tile package (.tpk) as the offline basemap in Trimble Unity Field, configure the web map’s offline basemap option in ArcGIS to use a tile package from your organization. See Configure the map (Set the offline basemap) on Esri's website for more information.

After configuration, the linked tile package appears in Offline Map Areas in the app. See Offline Map Areas for more information.

To view and interact with GIS data in real-time based on your current location in the field, you must configure a web map in Trimble Unity Admin.

You can set up multiple web maps to support specific field workflows, allowing you to use the map that most efficiently presents the data you need to get your job done.

1. In Admin, click GIS.
2. Click GIS Services.
3. Click the Service Definitions tab.
4. Select the relevant service definition.
5. To add a new map service, click the add icon on the Map Services panel.
6. Select the Service and click Add. You can filter the list by typing the first few letters of the service in the search field.

The new service appears in the Map Services panel.

7. Use the drop-down list to change the service, if desired.
8. To change the order of the services, click the reorder icon to the left of the Service drop-down list and drag it to the desired location. The first map in the list will be the default map for the app.

IMPORTANT: The order of these services is important because the first layer is the default map in the app, and the services draw in the order that they appear in this panel, meaning the first layer draw on top, the second layer below that and so on. More transparent layers, like asset layers, should be placed at the top and more solid layers, like world imagery and TPK files, should be at the bottom so they don't cover up other layers.

9. Select Is Active to activate a service. If Is Active isn't selected, the service remains inactive.
10. Enter the Refresh interval (number of seconds) to indicate how often you want the service refreshed.
11. Select Sync Feature Layers in Mobile to allow the mobile apps to download sync-enabled feature services, including those in web maps, for offline use. The feature service can either be read-only, or editable (any changes made are synchronized once connected to the internet) depending on how your geodatabase is set up.
12. Select the desired uses for this service: Plugins and Mobile.
13. To configure multiple web maps, repeat steps 6-13.
14. Define which domains, groups, and employees are associated with the service definition.
15. Perform a configuration sync in Trimble Unity Field to pull down the latest changes. See Configuration Sync for more information.

To edit assets, the user must belong to a group with the necessary GIS rights.

Follow these steps to confirm a user's permissions:

1. In Admin, click Admin and click Groups.
2. Select the user's group.
3. Under the Group Details tab, confirm that the GIS Right drop-down list is set to either Attributes (for editing attributes) or Geometry (for editing shapes).

The following are not supported in Trimble Unity Field:

• Mobile map packages (MMPK): MMPKs are not supported.
• Map Image Layers: These layers are not supported. When added to a Service Definition, they will not render in the app. While map image services configured in a web map may render in the app, full interaction with their service layers (e.g. viewing asset attributes) will be compromised.
